Reggae Stations Embrace Spice’s “Brand New Page”

Since the release of her reggae single, Brand New Page last week, dancehall artiste Spice says she is pleased with the response the track has garnered thus far.

The reggae song which was produced by Blaqk Sheep Music on the Tropical Connection Riddim was the perfect way to start the year, Spice says. “I chose to release it in January because that’s always the time most persons are determined to stay true to their new year resolutions and improve on things in their lives. That’s what Brand New Page is about – getting rid of things that shouldn’t be in your life and making a fresh start.”

“So far the response has been great, I can’t complain. The roots reggae stations and their listeners have been loving that song and before promoting my next single, Take Him Out alongside Mya, this will be the track that my team will be promoting both here and in Europe,” says Spice.

The creative artiste is also up for a number of nominations at this year’s Youth View Awards, scheduled to take place on February 4 at the National Indoor Sports Centre. The nominations include: Young, Hot and Hype Female Artiste of The Year, Fashion Icon Female, Favourite Local Female Artiste and Favourite Dancehall Artiste Female.

Spice who is known for her hits including, Ramping Shop with Vybz Kartel, Slim Versus Fluffy, Jim Screechie, Hot Patty Wine, Fun alongside Missy Elliott and more, says, “I’m definitely looking forward to this year’s YVAs; it’s always so much fun and they always come with some great concepts. I also am extremely happy with the number of nominations I received and I want to thank all the fans who have been voting so far.”

Spice Switches It Up For 2012

Dancehall artiste Spice is singing a new tune for 2012 in more ways than one. The dancehall diva who is usually known for her catchy dancehall rhymes, she has flipped the script and released the reggae single, Brand New Page as her first track for the year.

The reggae song which speaks from the point of view of someone who wishes to turn his life around, undoubtedly showcases Spice’s vocal ability. Spice spoke in reference to the single which was produced by Blaqk Sheep Music on the Tropical Connection Riddim, “The song is basically talking about wrong-doers

who want to make a big change in their lives and I specifically wrote it a first person narrative point of view, so that people can actually sing it as if it were their own story.”

Spice who is known for her hit singles, Ramping Shop with Vybz Kartel, Slim Versus Fluffy, Jim Screechie, Hot Patty Wine and others, says she has not made

a permanent switch to reggae and singing, but “music is art and art is about self-expression, and I always like to explore new and creative beats and genres to express myself. That way it remains fun and you don’t become predictable.”

Since persons can’t predict what the spicy one may do next, she says, “The next single I can definitely tell persons to look out for which will be released at the end of this month is the hip hop track, Take Him Out alongside international singer, Mya. It’s also the single which we performed together at last year’s

Reggae Sumfest shortly after it was recorded. It is also the debut single from her new album, which came out last month, while the video will also be out at the end of this month. So there are a lot of things in store, some of which are international, but I’m not yet in a position to divulge too many details. Just watch out for 2012.”

Romain Does Reggae Remake of Adele Track

Singer, Romain Virgo has recorded a reggae remake of the track, Don’t You Remember Me, originally done by international singer, Adele.

The cover single which was produced by his management team, Vikings Production and was released three days ago, has already racked up thousands of views on youtube. Romain says, “The original version of the song is one I love, so when my managers came to me with the idea, I readily did it. After it was recorded and mixed we weren’t quite ready to release it, but it was leaked online and the responses so far have been great.”

Romain, 21, who is known for his hits, Cyaa Sleep, Wanna Go Home, Who Feels It Knows It, Rich In Love, System and others, received rave reviews after his performance at the recent Shaggy and Friends concert. He says, “That was a great experience. I am thrilled at the reception of the audience to the songs, including some of the new ones. The journey has been an amazing one and I couldn’t have done it since 2007 without the help of my fans and my team. So I thank everyone.”

The singer says for his immediate future, fans can look out for him at this weekend’s staging of Rebel Salute at the Port Kaiser Sports Complex, St. Elizabeth and in addition, they can expect his sophomore album to be released in late April.

21st-Hapilos Celebrates Great 2011, Ready For 2012

After a phenomenal 2011 for the 21st-Hapilos team, plans are afoot to ensure an even more successful 2012.

Last year the Digital Distribution company saw a number of their clients’ productions dominating the local and international airwaves, namely, the much-talked-about Over Proof Riddim by Ja Productions, Popcaan’s Only Man She Want, produced by Sounique, the TJ Records-produced Party Shot (Ravin’ Part 2) by Popcaan, Buju Banton’s Set Up The Mic, produced by Young Blood / 21st-Hapilos, Boomshots Volume 1 by 21st-Hapilos, the Cardiac Strings Riddim by Zj Chrome, Ravin Vol. 1 by Adde productions and Chimney Records’ Intensity Riddim.

This year, some of the highly anticipated projects being marketed by 21st-Hapilos will be I-Octane & Chan Dizzy’s newly released Till Kingdom Come, produced by Russian of Head Concussion Records and the Fifth Gear Riddim, produced by Markus Records (one of Buju Banton’s sons).

Executive vice president of the company, Johnny Wonder says, “We are continuously pleased with the reception that digital marketing has steadily garnered in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Since 2010 we have been focusing on getting reggae and dancehall insiders additional exposure and income for their work and it has been going well. In addition to the online exposure and revenue, a number of artistes have seen an increase in airplay on overseas mainstream radio stations after their music is sent out to these international media houses. This is definitely a great thing for the industry and this year we not only want to increase that, but also expand our offerings.”

One of their expanded offerings comes in the form of Hapilos Teens, which will cater to the entertainment needs of teenagers on the party scene. The first of the events being staged by Hapilos Teens is the soca/reggae Black Light party called “Illumina – The Soca Edition”, which will take place on April 7 at the Constant Spring Golf Club. Later that month on April 21, the 21st-Hapilos will then stage their anniversary and award show.

Chino To Hit The Airwaves With Ballads

Love is in the air for Chino McGregor, but not in the way many may expect. The artiste will be releasing a slew of new singles in a few weeks, some of which will be ballads.

He says there has not been a permanent shift in his lyrics or style, instead, “I like exploring new genres, beats and topics and some of the songs that will be released shortly will be more singing than sing-jaying. There’s even a combination with myself and Di Genius singing called So Do I for the ladies – that will be hitting the airwaves in a few days.”

“…There’s also the single, Desert Rose, which is out now with myself and an artiste out of Cayman by the name of Jeffery Wilson and the video will be released in a few days, so everyone can definitely look out for those and other singles coming in a few weeks,” he says.

Chino is no stranger to style exploration. In May of this year Chino showcased his expansive knowledge of music when he released his debut US album, Chino, to rave reviews. The first two releases from the album, I Am (an upbeat club track with a French twist) and Seal Di Link, (a slow provocative reggae ballad) were complete departures from Chino’s prior-style. Seal Di Link went on to top charts in the US and sold in excess of 150, 000 on iTunes during the first week of its release. Likewise, one of his most recent love ballads, Driving Me Insane featuring singer, Denyque, which was also featured on the album has been a hit among fans.

“Music is definitely one of the loves of my life, and as a result of that I’m always going to be focused on it and exploring new areas and genres in an effort to please the fans,” he says.

Chino is also popularly known for his hits From Mawnin, Ruff It Up, Protected, Pon Yuh Head, Yeah Yeah (on the Peppa Riddim) and others.

Dancehall artiste Spice is back in the island after a three-week tour in Canada, and is ready to push her latest single, My Boyfriend’s Name is Dick.

The tongue-in-cheek single, which showcases Spice’s mastery of songwriting was produced by Seanizzle and featured on his Sunrise Riddim. Spice spoke in reference to her Canadian shows and the new single saying, “Oh wow, the reception in Canada was great. I had such a good time with my fans, not only while performing, but also hanging out after and doing signings. It’s important to me to spend time with them in between shows, or after performing – it was a good time.”

“As far as my new single goes, it was written after I heard the beat. It has a great vibe and I’ve been pushing it a lot in the streets and it has been getting a huge response. Though the title is a little bit of an eyebrow-raiser the song is extremely clean. It’s just a fun play on words and anyone who went to high school with me can tell you English and drama are things I’ve always loved, so it definitely comes out in my writing and songs now,” says Spice known for her mega-hits Jim Screechie, Ramping Shopalongside Vybz Kartel, which hit the Billboard charts upon its release, Slim Vs. Fluffy and others.

Spice is preparing to hit the African scene later this year to push her Afrocentric single, Hot Patty Wine.

Speak Easy Poetry and Live Band Show Tonight

Singer, Cen’C Love, daughter of legendary reggae artiste, Bunny Wailer is slated to take the stage at tonight’s Speak Easy: Live music and poetry showcase at Hope Gardens, St. Andrew.

The singer who is widely known for her single, Cassanova, will be joined at Speak Easy by other performers including: BluGrass in the Sky, Sezi, Jason Worton, Tina Simone Mowatt and a special performance by the Order of the Drum Circle.
In addition, art will be on display and available for sale from persons and companies including: photographers, Colin Porter, Jherane Patmore, pop and fine artists Richard Natoo and Micheal Talbot. The jewelry on display will be provided by Avant-garde design house, Rev Jewelry and select pieces on loan from the Braemar Gallery collection.

Producer of the event, Antoinette Campbell, Managing Director of Firefly Productions Ltd. says, “We are extremely happy to have all these talented performers on our lineup. The arts is an important aspect of who we are as a country and Speak Easy is a celebration of that. We will also have featured belly dancers from Raks Sharki Jamaica and that is also something I know people will be excited about.”

Speak Easy begins at 7 p.m. with an entry fee of $500 while students with IDs will be able to gain access for free between 7- 9p.m.

Bob Andy and Friends Thank Supporters

The producers of Bob Andy Unplugged: Tribute to the Songwriter thank the large body of enthusiastic fans who attended Friday night’s concert; by extension the many musicians, artistes, technicians, companies and sponsors who collaborated to produce an exceptional event.

Junior Lincoln, producer of the tribute series which was staged at the Karl Hendrickson Auditorium, Jamaica College, says, “We are gratified by the response which the event garnered. Not only were the audience members treated to outstanding performances under the arrangements of Ibo Cooper, Peter Ashbourne and Sean Michael Harris, but they also enjoyed some of the songs from Bob’s extensive catalogue which spans more than 50 years of his career – some of which they had never heard before, or had not attributed as penned by Keith ‘Bob Andy” Anderson. This was the concert’s success.”

The three-hour concert which featured over 30 Bob Andy-penned songs, opened with the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari and ended with the audience on their feet, with Andy leading all the performers and backing orchestra in I’ve Got to Go Back Home.

In addition, to everyone’s surprise, Andy closed the programme’s first segment backed by Desi Jones’ band. The introductory segment also featured the likes of: the first lady of Jazz, Myrna Hague, Cezar, Della Manley, Kathy Brown, Mutabaruka, Kai Wakeling, Maurice Gordon, Georgia Henry, Sean Michael Harris, Soul 4 Soul and Dwight Richards with a remarkable rendition of My Time.

The second half featured Lloyd Parkes and We the People with a 32-piece orchestra accompanying Marcia Griffiths, Pam Hall, Tony Rebel, AJ Brown, Ken Boothe and Ibo Cooper on the harmonica.

Dean Fraser’s Band took the third and final segment, which opened with Nambo Robinson presentation of Ska Music, followed by Nadine Sutherland and Chevaughn who had the auditorium singing along to Fire Burning while Big Youth had the audience entranced with Zion. Marcia Griffiths also made her second appearance in the final segment with It’s Impossible - a classic Andy love ballad. Others in the set also included: Natel, Denyque, Protoje, Luciano and Freddie McGregor.

Bob Andy in giving thanks to all on Friday night said, “All the love I missed as a child, is here in this auditorium tonight. Thank you.”

“Once again, we thank everyone for their labour of love on this project and not only helping to make it a success, but also helping to re-cement Bob as one of the industry’s consummate songwriters of our time,” says Lincoln.

The tribute concert was the collaborative effort of the Friends of Bob Andy and the Bob Andy Song Foundation. The Bob Andy Song Foundation was established to handle Bob’s current and future medical expenses as well as other charitable endeavours. All proceeds from the Bob Andy Unplugged concert benefit Bob Andy’s medical care and recovery and the Foundation’s work to nurture and inspire young songwriters.

“Music is the soundtrack of life and that’s where I live – I’m always writing,” says Bob Andy.

Since the iconic Songbook was released in 1972, Bob Andy has written and recorded nine albums, and has continued to pen original songs for other artistes, including most recently, Luciano and Marcia Griffiths. While prior to 1972, Andy had already catapulted his way to stardom courtesy of his exceptional songwriting and singing abilities. It is therefore not surprising that over the years, in excess of 60 Jamaican and international artistes have covered Andy’s work.

“I have never stopped writing,” says Bob. ”Vintage is a category I reject. Music is the soundtrack of life and that’s where I live. I am always writing.”

The many Andy originals written over the last 50 years will be celebrated and explored by over 30 current and legendary artistes across the genres of jazz, acoustic and reggae orchestra in a first-time event - Bob Andy Unplugged: Tribute to the Songwriter tonight, October 28 at the Karl Hendrickson Auditorium, Jamaica College, Hope Road.

Even tracks which received a warm reception abroad – such as the UK hit singleHoney and the new classic Zion, will be heard by many in the audience for the very first time.

The performers will include, Myrna Hague, Kathy Brown, Cezar, Mutabaruka, Della Manley, Georgia Henry, Soul 4 Soul, Freddie McGregor, Ken Boothe, Big Youth, Duane Stephenson, John Holt, Luciano, Marcia Griffiths, Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, Nadine Sutherland, Pam Hall, Protoje, Sean Michael Harris, Sharon Tucker, Suzanne Couch, Tony Rebel and more. In addition, following the concert, a Merritone party which is included in the concert admission price will be held on site.
